Cultuurnacht 2009 - Gemeente Breda

23 Januari 2009 vond de eerste editie van de 'Cultuurnacht' in Breda plaats. Samen met Jasper Kuipers (animator) werd ik gevraagd om een raampartij van 10 bij 30 meter aan te pakken.
We besloten dat we met de geschiedenis van het pand wilde werken. Het pand waarop de projectie plaats vond werd vroeger bezet door de sociale dienst. In het gebouw bevonden zich op de begane grond tientallen kleine kamertjes van ongeveer 3 bij 3 meter. In deze hokjes hebben honderden mensen een gesprek gehad alvorens zij hun uitkering toegewezen kregen. In onze projectie wilde wij werken met de gevoellens die bij deze mensen op gekomen zijn.
Om dit te bereiken hebben we op straat een aantal nietsvermoeddende passanten aangesproken onder het mom van een 'interview'. De mensen die akkoord gingen mochten ons volgen in het pand van de sociale dienst waar wij ter plaatse in één van de hokjes een 'set' op hadden gebouwd die bestond uit drie (te) felle lampen en een enorme camera. Na wat gerommel vertrok de 'reggiseur' om een extra tape te halen en even later ging de 'cameraman' kijken of hij moest helpen. Vanaf dit moment was de meegenomen persoon alleen. Alleen met zijn of haar gedachten. Alleen om te twijfelen of wij na 20 minuten niet een tweede tapje hadden moeten vinden. Alleen met de camera die constant heeft gedraaid.

Culture Night 2009 - Municipality Breda

January 23, 2009, the first edition of the 'Culture Night' took place in Breda. Along with Jasper Kuipers (animator) I was asked to create a projection work for a 10 by 30 meters window.
We decided that we wanted to work with the history of the building. The property on which the projection took place was formerly occupied by the social services. In the building's ground floor there where dozens of small rooms of about 3 by 3 meters. In these boxes, hundreds of people have had a meeting before their benefits were awarded. In our projection we wanted to work with the feelings these people must have experienced when they came to collect their benefits..
To achieve this we selected a few ramdom people from the steet and asked them to take part in an 'interview'. The people who agreed were to follow us in to the building of social services. In one of the boxes we had constructed a 'set' which consisted of three (verry) bright lights and a huge camera. After some tinkering the director left to get an extra tape and a little later the 'cameraman' went out to see if he needed help. From this point the person was all alone. Alone with his or her thoughts. Only to question whether we had left them for good. And all the time the camera has been running.
